Riding dirt bikes in Namibia

 Budget Traveling Namibia:

Namibia and Botswana

The December holidays were fast approaching and me and my 2 best friend (Andre and Shane) did not have much money on our name but a big desire to break free from city life. I had a crazy but beautiful idea to take our dirt bikes to Namibia, cost even less than staying at home.

Loading our family SUV (not 4×4) with some essential campaign equipment, enough food and water for about 3 weeks (mainly pasta for food) and a trailer with our 3 dirt bikes on.

Planing to head North from Johannesburg till we hit the desert with a budget of R3000 each that is R9000 in total for food, accommodation and fuel (about $700 in total).

Without any plans other than just driving till we reach solitude. We started this 3 week adventure.

We left in a hurry and our first stop was a small town called pofadder, we planned to spend the night there in luxury so we spent some money to pitch our tent in the yard of a backpackers near the boarder gate, that night we learned that the sun sets much later the more North you get so essentially your day was longer, that made us very happy but one thing about the dessert is that those hot day’s turn very cold very quick and that first night was a lesson on how to fight the cold in a small tent with 3 guy’s.

Early morning we slowly got to know how to break down our tent in a quick fashion because we had a passenger seat full of sweet grapes we found in a vineyard that we wanted to transport with us on our trip.

We chose the Pofadder boarder because it is the most quiet and we got through without any problems.

Through the border to Fish river canyon:

The Canyon is 160 kilometers long and 550 meters deep.

We made our way to Ai Ais Fish River Canyons, the world second biggest canyon, second to the Grand Canyon which is first. We paid the park entrance fee (R50 pp) and made camp in a dried up river bed, our first and only steak we had packed in was now on the fire with a few cold beers in our hands, while watching the most beautiful sun set over the Canyon.

The next morning we went for a short day hike and one thing I remember was not hearing the sound of bird’s, the sound of the canyon is dead quiet with a heat that can be very hot at times, but a beautiful view 24/7.

On our way to the Namib Naukluft Park:

Our mission was to get away from civilization and we found that and more in the Namib desert, we drove our car just outside the park got on our bikes with a few essentials and went dune riding. Me being a Motocross rider I was looking for the biggest dune I could find and my match was made that day.

That was one of the most memorable few day’s of the trip. Just the three of us riding every day till we had to peal our hands off the bars and hold a cold beer instead. I am still not sure how we left that desert alive but we did and with some good memories.

The riding was hard in the desert because we were on normal motocross tires and the best setup for the desert is paddle tires. But we did not care much, we had that place to ourselves.

Thank you for reading, I hope you follow the rest of my adventure.
